The feast of Christ’s birth
The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas today. On the greatest Christian feast, the day of the birth of Jesus Christ, who was incarnated and became man, before dawn all bells ring in Orthodox churches, announcing the arrival of Christmas and the Christmas celebration, which is then observed for three days.
The biblical story of the Nativity
According to the Bible, nine months after the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Most Holy Mother of God in Nazareth, saying: “Rejoice, full of grace… you will conceive and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus,” Caesar Augustus ordered a census of all people in the Roman Empire. Because of this, Righteous Joseph traveled with the Most Holy Mother of God to Bethlehem. Since many people had arrived, they could not find lodging and took shelter in a shepherds’ cave.
Shepherds and wise men worship Christ
In that cave, on the night between Saturday and Sunday, the Most Holy Mother of God gave birth to the Lord Jesus Christ without pain. She wrapped Him in linen cloths, bowed before Him, and laid Him in a manger. Then Righteous Joseph came and bowed as well. Shepherds from the fields arrived, guided by an angel of God, and bowed before Him, hearing the angels sing: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.” Three wise men from the East also arrived, led by a wondrous star, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, bowing before Him as the King of kings.
