Dr. Milica Bajcetic Wins Europe’s “Medical Oscar”

Serbian scientist Milica Bajcetic wins a major medical research award for advancing pediatric pharmacotherapy.

Major recognition for Serbian medicine

Serbian scientist and professor Milica Bajčetić has been awarded the prestigious International Medis Awards for Medical Research in the field of pharmacy, presented this year in Ljubljana.

The award is widely regarded as one of the most significant recognitions for medical research in Central and Eastern Europe, often referred to in the media as the “medical Oscar.” It honors physicians and pharmacists who, alongside their clinical work, achieve outstanding scientific results and publish research in leading international medical journals.

Strong competition and rigorous selection process

According to the organizers, this year’s international expert jury reviewed more than 240 scientific papers submitted from 11 European countries. After a months-long evaluation process, 18 researchers advanced to the final stage, competing across nine different medical fields.

In the pharmacy category, the award went to Milica Bajčetić, making Serbia one of the countries with a laureate at this year’s ceremony.

Advancing pharmacotherapy and pediatric medicine

Her research was recognized as a significant contribution to the development of modern pharmacotherapy and the improvement of drug safety, particularly in pediatric care.

According to Slovenian media, the awarded study focuses on improving therapeutic approaches and developing new pharmaceutical formulations designed to enhance treatment outcomes, especially for children.

Speaking about the award, Professor Bajčetić emphasized that the recognition reflects not only her own work, but also the efforts of the entire research team involved in the “Lena” project.

“Our research has made an important contribution to improving pharmacotherapy for newborns worldwide. This innovative formulation of enalapril has been clinically tested for the treatment of heart failure. Its solid tablet form, adapted for children, will be especially beneficial in environments with limited access to clean water and in extreme climate conditions,” she said.

She added that the award serves as additional motivation to continue research aimed at providing safe, effective, and high-quality therapy for children.

International recognition and regional impact

The award ceremony took place on March 12 in Ljubljana, bringing together doctors, scientists, and representatives of the academic community from across Europe, although not all finalists were present.

The International Medis Awards for Medical Research was established in 2014 with the goal of promoting scientific excellence among physicians and pharmacists in Central and Eastern Europe. Over the past 12 years, a total of 1,983 scientific papers have been reviewed, including 422 from Serbia.

Experts note that this year’s ceremony once again highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in medical research, as well as the growing contribution of scientists from the region to the advancement of modern medicine.
