Election Date in Serbia to Be Known by St. George’s Day (Đurđevdan, May 6)?

Vučić said Serbia’s election date could be known by St. George’s Day or shortly after, without announcing a specific date.

President Aleksandar Vučić said today that the public will soon learn when elections in Serbia will be held, but without specifying an exact date, noting that the decision is expected in the coming weeks.

According to him, the timeframe has already been outlined:

“I believe that by St. George’s Day (Đurđevdan, May 6), or a few days after, we will know approximately when the elections will be held,” Vučić said, responding to journalists’ questions in Tomaševac, where he attended the opening of a new bridge over the Tamiš River.

This means that the decision on the election date could be announced by early May or shortly thereafter.

No precise date, but a clear signal

Although he did not announce a specific election date, Vučić effectively confirmed that early parliamentary elections are being considered, with their timing dependent on political circumstances and strategic assessment.

He also stated that political opponents will have the opportunity to compete in the elections:

“They will have a chance to win. They have a strong momentum and a great opportunity. If the people want them, we will congratulate them,” Vučić said.

Political context

The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions and various opposition initiatives regarding a potential joint electoral strategy, as well as ongoing calls for elections to be called.

While regular parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held by the end of 2027, Serbia’s political system allows for early elections to be called before that deadline.

What follows

At this point, it remains unclear whether the elections will be called immediately after the indicated timeframe or somewhat later, but it is evident that a key decision will be made in the coming weeks.

Until then, the political scene is entering a phase of intensified preparations, with the expectation that the announcement of the election date will shape the next phase of political developments in Serbia.
