The death of Duško Vujošević sparked a powerful wave of tributes across the sports world. From his former players and students to coaches, rivals, clubs, EuroLeague, and major figures beyond basketball, many said goodbye to a man who defined an entire era.
What runs through all those messages is the same feeling: Vujošević did not leave his mark only through titles and results, but through the deep influence he had on the lives and careers of the people who worked with him.
Former Players Remember the Coach Who Shaped Them
Among those who paid tribute were former Partizan players such as Bertans, Lučić, and Westermann. Their messages were personal and emotional, filled with gratitude toward the coach who shaped them not only as basketball players, but also as people.
Saša Obradović spoke about a relationship that went beyond the court, saying Vujošević was someone he called for advice and someone whose guidance remained important long after their shared years in basketball.
The farewell messages from Jan Vesely, Bogdan Bogdanović, and Vlade Divac carried a similar tone. They spoke with respect, gratitude, and a clear awareness of the impact Vujošević had on their careers.
Respect Also Came From the Other Side of Great Rivalries
Vujošević was also remembered by people with whom he shared major sporting rivalries for years. Crvena zvezda published a message of condolence and recalled that he had also coached the club during the 1991/92 season.
His sporting rivals from Zvezda also spoke out, saying it would be difficult to see another career like his. Nebojša Čović admitted that the news of Vujošević’s death hit him hard despite the difficult and turbulent relationship they had over the years.
EuroLeague, Pešić, and Đoković Among Those Paying Tribute
Respect for Vujošević was also shown on the European stage. EuroLeague announced that all evening games would begin with a minute of silence in his honor.
Serbia head coach Svetislav Pešić spoke about him with great respect, describing him as authentic and one of the greatest of all time. He especially stressed that Vujošević’s greatest achievement was not only the trophies he won, but the players he developed.
Novak Đoković was also among those who said goodbye, making it clear that the impact of Vujošević’s passing reaches far beyond basketball itself.
The Farewells Show the Size of His Legacy
All the messages that followed his death show how important Duško Vujošević was to different generations of athletes and coaches. The same qualities keep returning in those tributes: demanding standards, authenticity, player development, strong character, and an influence that was never limited to results alone.
That is why the farewells to Vujošević did not remain just formal messages. They became powerful testimony to a coach whose influence in sport will endure for a long time.
