Lincolnwood Town Center, a shopping mall that had been part of community life for more than three and a half decades, is closing after more than 35 years in business. Its final day of operation will be Friday, after which the building will be demolished and the site prepared for a new project.
From 1990 to Closure
Lincolnwood Mall, located at 3333 W Touhy Avenue, opened in 1990. It once housed the department store chain Carson Pirie Scott. In more recent years, the stores that remained in operation included Kohl’s, Old Navy, and Victoria’s Secret.
From Shopping Mall to New Project
According to the plans presented, a new complex is expected to rise on the site of the current mall, including a car dealership and a retail store. The closure and demolition will take place in phases, marking the end of a long retail era in Chicago’s northern suburbs.
A Place That Sparks Nostalgia
Although the mall had become far emptier in recent years than it once was, its closure has triggered a wave of nostalgia among visitors. For many, Lincolnwood Town Center was more than just a place to shop — it was a space for gathering, walking, and everyday memories, something that feels even stronger now in the days leading up to its final closing.
A Symbol of Broader Changes in Retail
The shutdown of this mall fits into a wider story of change in retail and consumer habits. While some shopping malls are searching for new life through reinvestment and reconstruction, Lincolnwood Town Center is becoming yet another example of how former retail spaces are giving way to new models of development.
