Five members of the United States Congress have introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives proposing that February be designated as Serbian American Heritage Month.
The sponsors of the resolution emphasized that Serbians in the United States have made significant contributions to American society since the 19th century in science, medicine, technology, business, the military, public service, culture, the arts, and sports.
Resolution Highlights the Historic Alliance Between Serbia and the United States
The resolution places particular emphasis on the historic alliance between Serbia and the United States during World War I and World War II. 
It also highlights Nikola Tesla’s contribution to the development of modern civilization and the significance of Operation Halyard, described as the largest rescue operation of Allied airmen behind enemy lines in history.
The document states that Serbian immigrants established communities across the United States that continue to contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity. It also emphasizes that Serbian Americans have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to democracy, freedom, and civic engagement as loyal and patriotic citizens.
Bipartisan Group of Lawmakers Sponsors the Resolution
The resolution was introduced by Rep. Claudia Tenney of New York, who serves as co-chair of the Congressional Serbian Caucus; Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri; Rep. Scott Fitzgerald of Wisconsin; Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida; and Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana.
According to a statement from the Embassy of Serbia in the United States, the group’s support confirms strong bipartisan backing for the initiative to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of the Serbian community to the development of the United States.
The Serbian Embassy expressed its gratitude to the members of Congress who supported the initiative.
Tenney: Serbian Americans Have Helped Shape the Nation for Generations
Tenney, co-chair of the Congressional Serbian Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, announced that she had introduced the bipartisan resolution to designate February as Serbian American Heritage Month.
“Today, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate February as Serbian American Heritage Month. For generations, Serbian Americans have helped shape our nation and strengthened the bonds between the United States and Serbia. This resolution honors their history, heritage, and lasting contributions,” Tenney wrote on X.
For Serbian diplomacy, the proposed resolution represents a continuation of years of efforts that also led to the launch of a strategic dialogue. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić believes that the dialogue placed Serbia among the United States’ partner countries. He also noted that the United States had suspended such a dialogue with Pristina.
Šutanovac: Recognition for Everything Serbians Have Done for America
Serbian Ambassador to the United States Dragan Šutanovac said the initiative gives Serbians recognition for everything they have done for America in the past, what they are doing today, and what they will do in the future.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Serbians living in America, as well as all Americans of Serbian origin, on the establishment of Serbian Heritage Month. This is an exceptional development for all of you, and I believe that in the future you will continue promoting your people and your country in the same way you have done until now,” Šutanovac said.
