How to Register to Vote in Chicago: Serbian Consulate General Announces Requirements and Deadlines

Ahead of the upcoming early parliamentary elections to be held on Oct. 25 this year, the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago issued a Notice on Registration for Voting Abroad, including information on requirements and deadlines for voting in Chicago.

The notice states who is eligible to vote, which documents are required to exercise the right to vote, where citizens can check whether they are entered in the voter register, and where they can find all information about the early elections.

It should be noted that all citizens who meet all legal requirements will be able to exercise their right to vote in person and exclusively at the premises of the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago.

NOTICE ON REGISTRATION FOR VOTING ABROAD

Dear citizens of the Republic of Serbia residing within the consular jurisdiction of the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago,

Early elections for members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia have been called for October 25, 2026.

The Law on the Election of Members of Parliament of the Republic of Serbia (“Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia,” No. 14 of February 7, 2022, and No. 47 of May 21, 2026) provides that all citizens of the Republic of Serbia who are of legal age and legally competent, and who at the time the elections are called have registered permanent residence in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, have the right to vote and to stand for election. This permanent residence must be proven with a valid identity card or a valid passport of the Republic of Serbia.

In addition, for voting abroad, an additional requirement is the submission of an application to vote within the deadline prescribed by law, in this case from September 10 through October 3, 2026, by 5:00 p.m. Chicago time (00:00 Serbia time).

Interested citizens of the Republic of Serbia residing in the United States of America (USA), who meet the legal requirements, may register to vote abroad in the upcoming elections at the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago by submitting a duly completed and signed Request to Enter in the Voter Register the Information That the Voter Will Vote Abroad, together with a photocopy of a valid passport or identity card of the Republic of Serbia.

If an interested citizen of the Republic of Serbia who meets the stated requirements is not entered in the Unified Voter Register, it is necessary to also submit to the Consulate a Request for Entry in the Unified Voter Register in the Republic of Serbia, and to submit both completed forms and photocopies of a valid identification document of the Republic of Serbia (identity card or passport).

We reiterate that the deadline for registration to vote abroad (voting at the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago) begins on Thursday, September 10, and ends on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Chicago time, or 00:00 in the Republic of Serbia.

You may submit your voting application to the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Chicago electronically at izbori.cikago2026@mfa.rs, by mail (to 201 E Ohio St, Suite 200, Chicago, IL 60611), or in person at the premises of the Consulate General.

If you choose to send your application by mail, please note that the final deadline for the shipment to arrive at the Consulate is Friday, October 2, 2026, by 4:00 p.m. Chicago time (11:00 p.m. Serbia time).
