With only two races left in the Formula 1 season, the championship battle took a dramatic turn after the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

McLaren loses both results

FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer reported both McLaren cars — Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri — to the stewards after post-race inspection. It was determined that the skid blocks on both cars were thinner than the required minimum of nine millimeters.

The violation falls under rule 3.5.9.e of the technical regulations and carries a mandatory disqualification. Following hearings with the team and drivers, the decision was confirmed.

Precise measurements and rejected defense

Both cars showed nearly identical measurements: “RHS Front 8.88 mm, RHS Rear 8.93 mm.”
The FIA-approved measuring device has a margin of error of just 0.001 mm. Three McLaren team members were present during the inspection.

McLaren’s argument that accidental damage caused the irregularity was rejected.

Loss of points and team apology

Norris loses his second-place finish, while Piastri forfeits fourth position. Hours later, McLaren issued a public apology to its drivers and global fanbase.

Two races left — updated title standings

Two races remain — Qatar on November 30 and Abu Dhabi on December 7 — with 58 points still available.

The updated title standings:

  • Lando Norris — 390
  • Max Verstappen — 366
  • Oscar Piastri — 366
