The Association of Krajina Serbs “Prelo” from Chicago has decided to provide an annual scholarship of six thousand dollars to one student who chooses as the topic of their doctoral studies the suffering of Serbs (crimes and genocide) in Croatia and the Krajina regions in the 20th century. The call published by the association’s Board of Directors specifies that the future scholarship recipient should also cover in their doctoral dissertation the suffering of Serbs in the Krajina regions during the civil war on the territory of the former Socialist Republic of Croatia from 1990 to 1996.
Application period lasts three months
The call will remain open for a full three months, from June 15 to September 15, 2026. The scholarship is intended to last throughout the full duration of doctoral studies, but no longer than four years. In addition to students who have enrolled or are about to enroll in doctoral studies, the call is also open to students who are already pursuing doctoral studies at universities in Serbia and Republika Srpska. The selected candidate will be required to submit reports on their academic progress and on the progress of their doctoral dissertation at least once a year.

Dissertation expected to be published as a book
The student is expected to prepare the doctoral dissertation and later publish it as a printed book. As a co-publisher, the Association of Krajina Serbs “Prelo” will finance half of the printing costs and organize a book promotion event in Chicago.
What candidates need to submit
Interested applicants, in addition to a motivation letter, are expected to submit proof of enrollment in doctoral studies, the title and topic of the doctoral dissertation with special emphasis on the selected Krajina regions, a mentor’s recommendation, a short biography, proof of academic achievement in previous studies, a list of published scholarly papers and articles, proof of participation in activities of the Serbian community and homeland associations, as well as other documents requested by the конкурс commission.
Applications, together with all required documentation, will be accepted exclusively by email at konkurs@uksprelo.org.
