Ratko Mladic’s Body Arrives in Serbia

The general’s remains were taken to the Military Medical Academy for an autopsy, while the funeral is scheduled for September 7

The body of General Ratko Mladic arrived in Serbia in the afternoon and was subsequently taken to the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade, where an autopsy will be performed.

Members of the Serbian Armed Forces received the plane carrying his remains from The Hague before a convoy departed for the military hospital.

Ivan Lekovic, deputy head of the Military Medical Academy, confirmed that the autopsy will be carried out at the institution. He said the hospital has the necessary medical expertise, facilities and personnel to perform the autopsy and all required analyses and examinations.

Crowds Gather Along the Route to Belgrade

A large number of people gathered on highway overpasses between Surcin and Belgrade as the convoy passed.

Some greeted the procession with tears and banners carrying messages including “Ratko Mladic, Serbian Hero,” “Welcome Home, General!,” “Heroes Never Die,” and “Thank You, General.”

According to data from Flightradar24, the flight carrying Mladic’s body to Serbia was the most tracked flight in the world.

Bosiljka Mladic: His Final Wish Has Been Fulfilled

Ratko Mladic’s wife, Bosiljka Mladic, told Vecernje novosti that she felt more at peace knowing that her husband would be buried beside their daughter Ana, which she said had been his final wish.

“My heart is more at peace. Ratko’s final wish has been fulfilled, to rest beside our child,” Bosiljka Mladic said as she waited at her home in Belgrade for his body to arrive from The Hague.

Family and Defense Team to Address the Media

Mladic’s family, his defense team and the defense medical team will hold a news conference at noon tomorrow at the Media Center in Belgrade.

They are expected to discuss the circumstances surrounding Mladic’s death while in the custody of the Hague Tribunal, as well as details regarding his final farewell and funeral.

Memorial on Saturday, Funeral on Monday

A memorial service for Mladic is expected to be held at noon on Saturday, September 5, at the Serbian Armed Forces Hall in Belgrade.

The funeral is scheduled for Monday, September 7, at Topcider Cemetery.
