The Association for the Preservation of the Prizren-Timok Dialect “Južna pruga” has begun implementing the project “Serbian Folk Novellas in the Niš Dialect,” aimed at preserving and promoting the Niš dialect as an important part of the intangible cultural heritage of southeastern Serbia.
Five novellas in the Niš dialect
Over the coming months, five Serbian folk novellas will be adapted into the Niš dialect, after which they will be published in a publication that will be available in both print and electronic form. The publication will be intended for pupils, students, teachers, libraries, cultural institutions, as well as all lovers of folk literature and local speech.
Preserving dialect and encouraging young people
The project represents an effort to present the richness of the Niš dialect through works of folk literature, giving traditional stories a new linguistic form closer to contemporary readers from this area. At the same time, the project aims to encourage young people to take an interest in dialects and understand the importance of preserving them.
A public presentation of the publication is also planned in Niš, after which copies will be distributed to libraries, schools, and other cultural and educational institutions.
The project team includes literature doctoral student Milica Gocić, who is in charge of adapting the novellas, Dr. Nataša Spasić as proofreader and reviewer, while the project coordinator is Milena Šović.
The project “Serbian Folk Novellas in the Niš Dialect” is being carried out by the Association for the Preservation of the Prizren-Timok Dialect “Južna pruga,” with financial support from the Municipality of Medijana.
